IVC filter placement and removal

PREOP

• Most patient who have an IVC filter placed are inpatients
• If outpatient most often needs to be seen in clinic
• Need labs: CBC, Chem comp, INR

ANTICOAGULATION/ANTIPLATELETS

• DO NOT DISCONTINUE ANY ANTICOAGULATION.
• In fact most of the time we want the patient to be therapeutic at the time of removal

LOCATION OF THE PROCEDURE

• Cath lab

PREOPERATIVE ORDERS

• IV with NS (Normal Saline) 75ml/hr
• LABS: CBC, chem basic, INR

FOLLOW UP

• Phone call (1-2 days)
• IVC Filter Placement:  Patient needs 1 month Clinic appointment to follow up for possible removal.
• IVC Filter Removal:  No follow up or imaging needed other than phone call 1-2 days after procedure
