KYPHOPLASTY

PREOP:

  • Normal coags
  • Normal WBC (unless ok by the IR physician)
  • Usually needs anesthesia (MAC)
  • ALWAYS ROOM 5

ESTIMATED TIME: 30MIN

 

Equipment Always Necessary:

  • Lidocaine 40ml
  • 20G spinal needle
  • 4-0 caprosyn
  • Dermabond
  • KIT OF CHOICE
    • 9-L5= 15-2
  • T1-T8=10-2
  • Hammer, if not present in the kit
  • Formalin

For epidural injection

  • Methylprednisolone 80mg + 5ml of 0.25% Bupivacaine - place them togheter into a 10ml syringe on the table
  • 12 inch extension tubing
  • 3ml syringe
  • 22g spinal needle
  • Constrast - Isovue 

 

PREP:

  • POSITION: Prone
  • Mark level with pen before prep
  • DRAPE: Pediatric laparotomy T-drape (central supply
  • Place both AP and lateral II in position and take scout images - this is the most common reason for procedure delay

Dressing:

  • No dressing !!!!

PEARLS:

  • if two levels are to be performed. Please have a second kit available just in case. 
  • Please if possible, start filling the pathology paperwork (sticker, diagnosis = compression fracture of ?, requesting physician=IR physician + ref. physician...)
  • If epidural is to be injected call pharmacy to get the meds.
